Bone Appétit!

Here are some wonderful homemade treats for your special friend, made from whole wheat flour, egg, milk, oats and peanut butter – perfectly healthy for dogs. These have a predominate peanut butter taste and so if your dog loves peanut butter, he’s going to think these treats are pawsome :)

Makes 2 large trays

What you need
1 cup peanut butter
¾ cup milk
1 egg
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
⅓ cup oats

What to do

Preheat the oven to 160°C. Line two large baking trays with baking paper and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk the peanut butter, milk and egg together until no lumps remain. Add the flour and baking powder until roughly combined. Mix in the oats. At this point I started to use my hands to work the ingredients together.

Turn the dough out onto the counter and using a rolling pin, roll the dough out to 1cm thickness. Cut into shapes using a cookie cutter or a knife. I used large and small bone shaped cutters that I found on eBAY for a few dollars.

Arrange shapes on baking trays and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until very lightly browned on the bottom. Flips the dog biscuits and bake for 10-12 more minutes.

Allow to cool completely before serving to your pet. Store at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 1 week. The baked treats can also be frozen for up to 2 months.

Thanks to Sally’s Baking Addiction for the wonderful recipe.

Meet Lulu and Duffy McGrath!

So I put the dog biscuits to the test with two lovely dogs called Lulu and Duffy, their owner – my lovely work colleague Michelle, brought her pets into the office last week at the advertising agency where I work and just about won everyone’s hearts over. I like to think they are our part time employees and hope they come back often! Lulu and Duffy are fun loving, friendly pooches and lay quietly on their bed next to their mummy Michelle all day. They’re so cuddly and fluffy and like to watch Michelle work, they follow her every move and can sit, do hi-fives, spin in a circle and roll over! I think the visit was a big day for them though, and they probably fast asleep by the time they got home :) So to reward them for their visit, our little friends got given some peanut butter treats.

The adorable pups sit with dog biscuits in front of them until Michelle says it’s OK to eat them! Their little faces waiting for biscuits was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!

Clever little Lulu can sit with a dog treat on her nose until Michelle says it’s OK to eat! How clever is this pup!

So if you’ve got a little friend you’d like to give a treat to, try these homemade dog biscuits made with love.
