Serves 4 – 6 people
1 cup hot water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ tablespoons sugar
¼ teaspoon baking powder
1 cup plain flour
¼ cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup cream
100g dark chocolate, chopped
750ml vegetable oil for frying
What to do
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pot.
Meanwhile for the churros, boil water in a kettle and measure out 1 cup of hot water in a large jug. Add the vegetable oil, salt, sugar and baking powder to the water and stir well. Add in the flour and stir well for a minute, until there are no more lumps.
Put mixture into a piping bag with a 1cm star nozzle.
Test the oil with a small piece of dough, when the dough is sizzling the oil is ready for frying. Pipe 8cm pieces directly into the oil. Use one hand to squeeze and the other hand use a knife to cut the dough and guide it into the oil. Fry for 2 – 3 minutes until golden brown, turning over halfway.
Drain on paper towels, and while still warm, toss in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
For the hot chocolate sauce, heat the cream until almost boiling. Pour over the chocolate and let set for 2 minutes, then whisk all ingredients until smooth.
