I love traditional Black Forest cake with its spongy chocolate layers, sandwiched whipped cream, sour juicy cherries and coating of chocolate shavings – however I don’t always have the time to make it for dinner parties. Instead I made these individual servings in stemless wine glasses and think they look just lovely! Plus it’s only minutes to assemble.
What you need
Woolworths Select Unfilled Chocolate Sponge Cake
500g Dairy Farmers Vanilla Custard
670g jar Marco Polo pitted cherries
150g thickened cream
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
bar of chocolate to create curls
What to do
Arrange chunks of chocolate cake in the base of some glasses and press down with your fingers to make a chocolate layer about 2cm high. Spoon over several cherries plus some of the cherry liquid. Dollop the custard over until you have a custard layer about 2cm high. Jiggle the glasses so the custard evens out and fills all the gaps.
Repeat with more chocolate, cherries and cherry juices.
Lightly whip the cream with sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form, pile on top of the trifle and chill overnight for all the flavours to come together. Then decorate with chocolate curls and enjoy :)
To create chocolate curls get a room-temperature block of chocolate and scrape your knife down it lengthways (towards yourself) to create pretty, delicate curls.
